The master says that even if you fail and keep trying until the very end you shall be reborn as a man or women with great self-control and the power to be tested further. If you pass your test in this lifetime and you never fall prey to the enticement of the senses and have roasted the seeds of bad habits in the flames of wisdom you will be given amnesty or liberation. If the Lord does not show mercy and give divine paroles his erring children will suffer indefinitely life after life. 
This whole existence is a gladiatorial boot camp for people who are lacking mental, physical and spiritual development. At its very best, this is nothing but a penitentiary colony for spiritually retarded people; however, the moment you begin to develop your God given intelligence, it becomes a school of wisdom for immortals; then you begin to laugh at the antiques of the world because you begin to understand what is actually happening as you become more spiritually advanced. Then the advanced disciples are given higher teachings to test their spirituality on this psychological battlefield of earth.
The masters tell us that the quality and depth of a yogi’s meditation, God’s grace and the guru’s help are the three main requisites to be liberated. The disciple’s effort must be twenty five percent; the guru gives twenty five percent and God’s grace which constitute the remaining fifty percent of the requirement. Finding God is not a mathematically created jackpot for attaining liberation. Our creator, God is the sole judge whether the disciples spiritual conduct has been satisfied, though a disciple with the assistance of the guru satisfies the cosmic laws of karma with love and devotion for God, he will receive His grace. The fanciful efforts of an under developed spiritually retarded individual must not try to jump-start to a higher state of realization until he seeks out the help and guidance of an enlightened guru.
As inevitable as it is in a world of relativity; good and evil, darkness and light it seems as you try to expand yourself it holds true that in all endeavors you will encounter enemies. There is resistance the moment you try to accomplish something. There is resistance from the earth when a plant emerges from a seed, the insects and bugs go after it, and the weeds choke it and compete for its water and nourishment. The only protection for it is the gardener. It is also true for humans because of inner weaknesses and unfavorable circumstances we haven’t the power to give forth the branches of achievement on the tree trunk of life. Because bad karma and the weeds of our terrible habits that are stifling and choking our ground we need the help of a guru. The guru gives you the techniques of meditation for burning off bad weed habits so you can resist these habit enemies. Then after you have advanced, the guru gives you the advanced technique of burning off bad karma.
When the first yearning for truth comes, somebody offers you a book or recommends a teacher to awaken you. Then when your desire is strong enough and you want to emancipate your “self” God will send you a guru, not just an ordinary teacher but one that has cosmic consciousness and is one with him, such as Jesus, Krishna, Budha, Sri Ramakrishna, Paramahansa Yogananda, and other great unknown masters who have come to earth throughout the centuries. But these masters have complete mastery of the self and no karma of their own. They come only to help the disciple to be free from his own karma. It is extremely important for you to follow one master who has no karma who can take a portion of your cross on his back. If the person you follow has not realized God he can not take it, he is only a school teacher. There is a difference between a Guru who has realized God and a teacher. In transmitting or bestowing wisdom, money, physical or mental power and spiritual consciousness, the one must have attained those assets himself. The best of all the givers among men like that of God Himself is the guru. Once the disciple is ready for the sublime experience, only an illumined guru can transmit his divine realization. The subject of loyalty the master says is the highest law in the guru disciple relationship and at all levels, it is not just to the guru; you have to practice with your wife, your husband, your family, your work, your nation and your church. Loyalty to everyone is a state of nobility of the soul. A master said to his disciple, “will you never avoid me at any time?” The disciple said, “sure no problem.” Then the master began to come after him with his surgeon’s knife and he began to cut the ego out of him; he many times wanted to run for his life but he stood his ground. And that is what you need to do in this life. One student said to an advanced disciple “I can fight maya {cosmic illusion}.” And the advanced disciple said to him, “you puny, tiny, human being; you want to fight the cosmic force that can destroy galaxies and solar systems.” Therefore unless you hide behind the shield of the guru, you will never make it, it’s impossible. Some masters say, “I want only those souls who are ready to hurl their bodies in the fires of self-sacrifice.” To seek God is martyrdom, the martyrdom of the ego. How does that sound?
Isn’t that a cheerful thought? You see that when most people begin to enter into that sea of expansion of consciousness they want to run for their lives. Once you have given your vow to your guru, it is too late, you’re in. The guru is like a tiger; when he gets hold of his prey he never lets it go. Even if you cannot be in the physical presence of your guru you must follow the teachings of a guru if you want to find God, but not just any teacher, that will not do; there is only one guru uniquely given to the disciple. Then comes the first gift from God when you have reached a certain state you will be able to see your own guru, not in materialization, but in deep super-conscious visions at night and then once he has looked into your eyes, then you will know, because no human being can look with such intense love. That is when the relationship begins. But if you turn away from the emissary of God you shall have to wait long and prove yourself before he shall respond again.
We are told that during the period of psychological curiosity we should investigate thoroughly as God sends to the seeking individuals just ordinary teachers for addressing the awakening of souls through spiritual books and so on. But when a soul is determined to know God, the Heavenly Father sends him a guru or an illumined soul. A person who learns from an ordinary teacher is called a student but a person who learns from a guru is called a chela or disciple. When the disciple faithfully applies and learns the teachings of a God sent guru preceptor, he attracts the same guru in following incarnations until liberation is attained.
The master tells us that when he is no longer here physically the teachings will become the guru as he has impregnated every word of these teaching with the spirit of God. Therefore as you spend thirty minutes every day pouring over these words of wisdom that place themselves inside the computer of your subconscious mind, gradually you begin to have a vast library of spiritual knowledge and then as you develop you will reawaken the intuitive wisdom of your soul. Intellectualism, if studied from a great master will if you study deeply gradually transform itself into intuition. Secondly is meditation; the master says when in meditation because of the great peace everything you need to know will begin to place itself in front of you.
Now you see those guru’s coming in America, they are extremely talkative. If anyone promises you that they are going to balance your chakras or raise your kundalini, no my friend, you cannot bypass anything on the spiritual path. Do not be fooled for when your kundalini is raised you have no more feeling down there. Guru Yogananda said when he was in his guru’s ashram no one was allowed to say a single word unless addressed. When you are in front of a true guru you don’t say a single word if he does not talk to you the whole day. If he does not talk to you for a week, you do not talk to him, if he does not talk to you for a month you do not talk to him. Sri Ramakrishna did that to Swami Vivekananda because he was a great intellectual and he wanted to teach him more devotion. Someone asked Swami Vivekananda, “don’t you mind the indifference of your guru? he said no, he knows what he is doing, he is organizing my mind.”
One of the worst shafts of maya (illusion) is the unwillingness to meditate. That “unwillingness” is a veil over man’s eyes which prevent us to attune ourselves with God and therefore miss the opportunity to find our true spiritual mentor or Guru. Remember the masters or gurus are not asking us to renounce anything, they only ask us to control everything which is much more difficult. If God were not planning to release us he would not have given us the desire to know him and would not have given us the liberating techniques of yoga meditation. It is the ego in the hearts of men that prevent them from listening carefully to the wisdom of the sages and which stops them from transforming their lives by not listening with profound attention. Meditation will give you a great inner equilibrium and will place all the beautiful data within yourself that you need to know, not great intellectual questions but what you need in your daily life.
